Time Line Therapy ™

As part of your NLP practitioner training, you will also be trained and certified as a Time Line Therapy™ practitioner.

Since the introduction of the Time Line Therapy™ techniques in 1988 , there has been a rapid uptake of the process by people involved in personal change or personal development due to the speed and effectiveness with which the process deals with unwarranted emotions, limiting decisions and beliefs, anxiety and phobia.

The process is also excellent for enabling clients to set and achieve their goals.

What is Time Line Therapy™ ?

The Time Line Therapy™ process was introduced to the public in 1988 with the publication of the book 'Time Line Therapy™ and the Basis of Personality', by Dr Tad James and Wyatt Woodsmall.

The Time Line can be seen as a model or a simulation of how our mind works, and how we store a representation of our memories and significant emotional events along a line of time from the past, through now, to the future.

We store both the past and the future in our minds. The time line that we recall to represent these chronological memories, beliefs and events is not necessarily how these events and experiences actually happened, but rather a map or a representation of them.

It is not important that this time line is not 'real' (as all memories are merely distorted representations of past experiences), only that it's owner can utilise it as means to access and re-evaluate past experience (and future goals). The time line is though 'real' in the sense that it describes and contains how we 'see' things in our minds.

Whenever we store any memory, we store it as an internal representation of that event or experience; it is not actually the real memory of the real event, rather a 'generalised and distorted' representation of it - in any case, any number of people present at that same event would experience the event differently, as they have a different set of filters through which they memorised the experience in the first place.

In the same way, Time Line Therapy™ enables the client to bring up and visualise past experiences on a screen.  You can see a video of a string of events representing the places in our past where unwarranted emotions, beliefs and decisions that have shaped our lives were created in the first place (through our distorting filters).

One can imagine the Time Line as a string of pearls (the Gestalt), each pearl containing the memory of the event or experience, and each memory containing images, sounds, smells, tastes, words and feelings or emotions surrounding that event.

Time Line Therapy

Whenever a new event or experience occurs in the present, our mind searches through comparison with similar events; searches through our filter systems in a certain way, producing some meaning to this new experience, coding it, or boxing it as a similar experience to one of those previously coded memories.

In going through the Time Line Therapy™ process, a client can find the root cause experience of similar experiences (e.g. unwarranted anger, sadness, etc.), recode that internal representation by recovering knowledge and learning that had previously been deleted or distorted, and then recode all the similar events (pearls) along the time line to the present.

The process effectively 'blows out' the whole string of the 'problem' in time, in a fast effective and painless way for the client - effective therapy is not about recovering and discussing 'content' from the past.

Time Line Therapy™ does not require the client to discuss in detail (with the therapist or themselves!) past memories.

Effective personal change comes from finding what the problem is by looking at present behaviour, then identifying and changing the process or strategy by which the client creates the problem.

We deal with the 'How', not 'Why';    Process not Content

Time Line Therapy™ has proved time and time again to be a very powerful and very quick way to enable people to revisit sometimes painful and dramatic experiences, to view these experiences from new perspectives, and to find new resources; enabling them to re-coding that experience. This re-coding can have profound change effects upon the internal filters, creating more resources to achieve more positive behaviour and therefore results.

Here are some specific ways in which Time Line Therapy™ is so powerful;
