Hypnosis

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis or Hypnotism is 'the art of entering into trance'. Hypnotherapy is utilising 'trance' within the therapy process, in order to achieve the desired outcome.

Trance is any altered state, any state of not being fully 'conscious'; anything presently out of your conscious awareness; where the unconscious mind is present.  For instance, have you ever had a day dream where you became less aware of your surroundings? Perhaps times where you relax, 'switch off' a little, and become less aware of your body on the chair or sofa, and go into 'another space' in your mind?  These are examples of relaxation, which is a form of Trance.

How can you go into a Trance?

By choosing to allow yourself to relax physically and mentally, by choosing to switch off somewhat from the external environment, and enter a space inside; this is one example of how you can go into trance..

There may be different levels of relaxation or trance, depending on how deeply you allow your consciousness of mind and body to relax.

Meditation, for example, is a process that can lead to deeper levels of self-relaxation. This is achieved by conscious preparation and a process of emptying the mind of day to day thoughts, and allowing space for communication from deeper within; communication that often we don't allow ourselves to hear, or listen too. However, it is in this deeper place, in the unconscious that our true identity, intuition and resources lie, and by giving ourselves the permission to listen to this inner communication, we have the possibility to listen to the wisdom of our true self.

This true self is the thing we seek - its the whole, congruent, aligned person; its the 'being' part of a Human Being. When we say to ourselves ''what am I here for?, what is my purpose in life?, who am I really'', it is this part of us, the core of us that we connect with and communicate with (when we take the time to listen).

How is trance induced in Hypnosis:

In Hypnotherapy, the practitioner will use an hypnosis induction through which the client will enter a deeply relaxed state or 'trance'.

The trance is induced by Suggestion, to the unconscious mind, communication directly to the unconscious mind.

Definition:  By Unconscious Mind, we don’t mean anything that is mysterious, just Unconscious.  Your Unconscious Mind is the part of your mind that you are not conscious of right now. For instance, until I mention it now, were you consciously aware of your back against your chair, or how your feet are resting on the floor, or room to the right or left of you? - and now that I've mentioned it, you have become consciously aware of these things.

Suggestion is either a direct, indirect or guarded way of presenting an idea.  It is different from logical proof, because of the absence of formal evidence.  A Suggestion is usually merely an idea which seems plausible, and which is advanced with an appearance of truth, reality, or accepted fact.

Theory:  Among other things, trance can be induced by Fixation of Attention, Ambiguity or Suggestion.
Fixation of Attention occurs when the client’s attention becomes focused on a stimulus or an idea to the exclusion of other stimuli or ideas.
Ambiguity occurs when the input information or sensory data are vague, uncertain, indistinct or unclear.  Ambiguity in any representational system can cause trance.

Suggestion is causing an idea to enter into the client’s mind, either directly or indirectly.  Trance can also be induced by suggestion — Direct or Indirect.  Indirect Suggestion is best used when the client is in the waking state.  Direct Suggestion is best used when the client is in trance.
